Your Health and Wellness Map

Forget a GPS, Here’s a Map for Your Health and Wellness Journey

There’s no question: health is a journey, not a destination. Now wouldn’t it be great if you could put your health goals into a GPS app and have it guide you every step of the way?

Well, we have the next best thing! We’ve created a roadmap that will help you make lasting health and wellness improvements and we’re sharing it with all of you Healthwise Exercise TV blog readers!

Ready to get started? Here are some of the steps you should take in your journey.

First Stop: Your Home

You’re likely reading this at home, so why not start there? Take a look around real quick. Do you spot any clutter or dust? Or does the air in your home feel stale? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, it may be past time you rid your home of these sources of bad energy. Besides being unsightly, clutter, dust, and grime can result in more feelings of stress and anxiety. Negative energy can even lead to more disagreements and grievances. So give yours the boot.

When it comes to decluttering, an organizational system is key. From drawers to closets to cabinets, implementing an “everything has a place and everything in its place” mentality can help you stick to this new setup. And don’t let paperwork trip you up. You can easily digitize files for better organization and cleanup.

Next: Your Expectations

With your home scrubbed and polished, you now have the brain space to think about what other health improvements you can make. Before you do this and start setting goals, however, take a step back on your path and think seriously about how best to achieve those goals. True, it may be thrilling to think about overhauling your life and making drastic changes. But in reality, Tiny Buddha explains that smaller steps are far more effective for creating habits that will last. Need a few examples? Try getting out for 20 minutes of extra exercise each week or getting an extra 30 minutes of sleep.

Time for Some Decent Sleep

Sleeping while you’re following GPS? Not a good idea at all, of course! But when you’re traveling the road to better health, falling asleep is perfectly fine. It’s necessary, as a matter of fact. If you’ve been missing out on quality sleep lately, here is one effective tip to help you get the shuteye your mind and body are craving: add magnesium. Magnesium helps the muscles in your body relax and the thoughts in your mind settle.

Now You Need to Fill Up The Tank

Much like your car on a road trip, you’ll need the right fuel to get you on your way. A clean and healthy diet based on whole foods is the best approach. You can think of this sort of balanced diet as premium fuel and a diet of processed foods as cheap gas. While the latter may seem better for your budget, it’s sure to gunk up your “engine.” This is also an instance where making small changes can have a lasting impact on your health.

Start Your Engine and Get Moving

It’s time to head to the next stop on your health and wellness map! If you’re up and moving, you’re already halfway there, because up next is physical activity. Both adults and children should get exercise on a daily basis. Doing so offers some incredible mental and physical health benefits. There are plenty of great options too if you’re not sure where to start. Playing tennis, daily walks, yoga, taking online fitness classes like those from Healthwise Exercise TV, taking in-person fitness classes, joining a sports league; the list goes on.

Switch to All-Wheel Drive for Your Career

In the last two years, many people have taken a cold hard look at their work lifestyles, and a lot of them said, “no more!” And you can too! You don’t have to continue through the rinse, lather, repeat cycle of a dead-end job or a career where you’re miserable. Instead, revive your life and career by making a choice to change. Start your own business, become a freelancer or even go back to school for the degree you’ve always wanted. Most online programs are designed with working professionals in mind so that you can earn while you learn without feeling completely overwhelmed. If y0u're retired, learning something new or rekindling an old interest is a good way to keep your mind sharp. The end result? A giant step toward a new you and new earning power.

Take It Outdoors

According to the EPA, the average American spends 93 percent of their life inside. That’s a true travesty! Spending time outdoors offers a host of benefits that include better sleep, reduced stress, a necessary dose of vitamin D, and even heart-healthy exercise. If you spend most of your time inside, it’s time to grab that GPS and head into the great outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, trail running, camping or climbing, find something you enjoy and make a point to enjoy time outside as often as you can. If you need an extra push, invest in items that will make your excursions more comfortable.

Finally, Take Time for a Tune-Up or Two

Once you’ve started on the path to health, wellness and happiness, sticking to your goals will get easier and easier. That’s not to say there won’t be roadblocks and detours along the way. So as you continue, use these moments to take extra care of yourself. Check in to see if you need more self-care and definitely schedule routine maintenance with massage and physical therapists.

Like any road trip or journey, the stops you need may look different from anyone else. Remember, this is your life and your health! But do give the tips above a try and feel free to use them as your roadmap to getting started with a healthier and happier journey. Safe travels!
