1. What inspired you to become a fitness professional?
I was a college cheerleader for football and basketball at Syracuse University, and after college while working in TV News, I was too busy and stressed to make myself go to the gym. I decided to become a group fitness instructor so that I had planned "practices" with a group of friends and teammates who counted on me to be there, so that I could get to my workouts or be fired! This was one of the best decisions of my life. I'm 48 and have been teaching since I was 22. I now get paid to work out and make peoples lives better one workout at a time. I have also added many certifications (see bio) personal training, to face yoga to health coach.
When I moved to NYC I decided to combine my TV and fitness careers by creating fitness videos.
2. What certifications, degrees, or specialized training do you hold?
Health coach(IIN)
personal trainer(AFAA)
group fitness instructor (AFAA)
yoga teacher (Yogafit/Yoga Alliance 200 hr RYT)
face yoga expert (FIT FACE)
Broadcast Journalism Degree (Newhouse School at SU)
3. How do you approach fitness for people over 50, and what makes it unique compared to younger populations?
I believe that the best workout is the one you enjoy, where you don't dread it because of pain, sore muscles, or injuries. So whether that's dancing, walking, doing yoga, strength training, bike riding outside, or a combo of these...if you like it, and do it with friends, it will be easy to keep the healthy routine going.
4. What are three of your favorite exercises for people over 50, and why?
-Walking workouts with added strength moves
-Yoga for balance, strength and calm
- Weightlifting workouts for strength and bone health
5. What’s one small lifestyle habit you recommend that makes a big difference in long-term health?
Yoga and meditation. Flexibility, strength, and focus are key. Even if you just do 10 minutes a day (Like in my Yoga Essential Stretch (Y.E.S.) video that can pair with the Calm App for a moving meditation snack anytime of day.
You can even do yoga with your grandkids! I have free videos for all the above including my Baby Bootie Camp workout (strength and cardio) and Squirrel Yoga for Sunshine (grandparent and me yoga). Yoga for Sleep and Yoga for a Healthy Back videos are also popular with this age group.
Face Yoga sessions are also amazing to help you look as young as you feel with Gua Sha and face roller tools, acupressure, facial strengthening exercises to tone your "other" cheeks, forehead, eyelids, eye bags, frown lines, double chin, jouls an sagging neck. This combo can be done with me over facetime and lifts, detoxes your lymph nodes, increases circulation and relaxation!
6. What’s a common misconception about exercising later in life that you’d like to clear up?
That you can only do chair yoga. I know marathoners, boxers, dancers, weightlifters and yoga/gymnastics aficionados in the ages of 50-80.
7. Can you share a client success story that has inspired you in your career?
Actually, my parents lived north of Tulum, Mexico for years and a neighbor was a 70 year old yoga instructor at local hotels and wellness retreats. She is who I want to be when I grow up!
Also, I used to train singer Phil Collins who suffered from balance issues and shoulder pain because of years of drumming. I got him fit enough to go back on the road when he was about 70!
8. What advice would you give to someone who feels hesitant or intimidated to start exercising after 50?
Do you want to be happier, live longer, meet friends, improve balance and memory, sleep better and have more energy? Who doesn't! Working out will give you all of that.
9. What’s your personal favorite way to stay active?
I love to run at the beach and then do 10 mins of YES Yoga practice afterwards, looking at the trees, hearing the birds and water, and feeling the breeze and sun on my body!
10. If you could give just one piece of fitness advice to people over 50, what would it be?
You'll never be as young again as you are today. Make the Most of it!
