1. What inspired you to become a fitness professional?

I spent my 20's stuck in corporate jobs I hated, being incredibly sedentary, not prioritizing my health at all and feeling very depressed. As I drew near my 30th birthday, I discovered an unexpected new love for yoga. And, as I fell in love with movement in this way and really for the first time, I unlocked a whole new potential within myself that I didn’t realize was there. Physically, my body started to tone up and I became much less stiff and much stronger, but, mentally, my entire attitude and outlook on life totally changed too. Prioritizing my health more made me more confident,

"I had more self-respect and I realized I was the only architect of change in my life."

I felt so passionately about these changes and this transformation I was experiencing through movement, that I trained to become a posture therapist and love helping others through their own version of this same transformation! I don’t consider myself to be a fitness professional, I am a movement teacher focused on improving people’s quality of movement patterns (rather than getting them sweating or jumping around). By improving the quality of our movement patterns, our fitness becomes a lot less injury prone and painful, with better results!

2. What certifications, degrees, or specialized training do you hold?

  • Postural Alignment Specialist 1, 2

  • Exercise Therapy Skills (from The Egoscue Institute

  • 250 hour yoga teacher (Vinyasa and Yin)

  • Buteyko Method Breathwork Instructor

3. How do you approach fitness for people over 50, and what makes it unique compared to younger populations?

My approach for helping people over 50 is exactly the same as how I treat anyone of any age … age isn’t an important variable to consider in my work, the person’s quality of movement patterns and how they feel when they move is what is important to me.

In my work, we always proceed with caution, respect the body, work within the limits of the body and have faith that the power of the body to heal naturally is immense, if given the right stimulus.

I focus on teaching people how to improve the quality of their movement patterns (before they focus on quantity) and the methodology behind this is always the same, regardless of age, gender, symptom, condition, immobility etc. I work with plenty of people over 50 who are much fitter and more mobile than people in their 20's!

4. What are three of your favorite exercises for people over 50, and why?

Again, I don’t treat people over 50 any differently to people under 50. But my favorite 3 posture exercises, which tend to work well for most people’s postures, are Static Back, Standing at Wall and Wall Frog (you can find all of these on my Youtube). This tend to be accessible for most bodies and gently, passively put the body into balance which eases tension and creates freedom.

5. What’s one small lifestyle habit you recommend that makes a big difference in long-term health?

Prioritizing 10-30 mins of posture exercises everyday (or as often as you can), so you bring your body into balance and wake up your deep, important postural muscles. If you do this, you’ll experience less pain, more mobility and less anxiety in your everyday life but also when you exercise.

6. What’s a common misconception about exercising later in life that you’d like to clear up?

That there’s anything age-based holding you back from reducing your pain. It is not something you have to accept or ignore. It’s something you can change. When you learn to move differently, rewire your muscles and realign your joints, you’ll experience a whole new body for yourself. This will happen for you regardless if you’re 18 or if you’re 80. I have had many clients 70 years + who have got rid of decades of pain by working on their posture.

7. Can you share a client success story that has inspired you in your career?

I have so many now it’s quite hard to pick one (and you read through some of them on my Testimonials page here but some of my favorites are when people have gone from 24/7 chronic pain (leaving them bed-bound) to being out of bed, having pain free days and getting their lives and happiness and hope back!

8. What advice would you give to someone who feels hesitant or intimidated to start exercising after 50?

Start with posture! Posture is gentle, accessible for anybody (we can modify everything to work for your body) and the perfect springboard Into more vigorous exercise afterwards. Too many people think of movement as high intensity, sweating and ‘hard’. Actually, movement can be very gentle, calming and ‘easy’ and still incredibly powerful.

9. What’s your personal favorite way to stay active?

I do a lot to stay active. I walk and do posture exercises everyday. I do yoga and pilates about three times a week and I go to a CrossFit gym three times a week. I also love anything that comes my way - bike riding, horse riding, skiing, climbing … you name it, I love it.

10. If you could give just one piece of fitness advice to people over 50 to feel and look younger, what would it be?

Learn to breathe properly again. By restoring your proper nasal, diaphragmatic breath bio-mechanics, you’ll have a clearer head, all of the systems in your body will work more functionally, improved blood and oxygen flow means your skin and eyes will be brighter and you’ll have so much more energy.
